Agrigento outlaws souvenirs that glorify Mafia.
The mayor of the Sicilian metropolis of Agrigento has banned the sale of Mafia-themed souvenirs in an effort to advertise legality and keep away from damaging stereotypes of the Italian island.
The ban was introduced after some outlets within the metropolis centre displayed memento figures portraying Sicilians wearing conventional garments and carrying the lupara sawn-off shotgun, full with the phrases “u mafiusu“.
The ordinance launched by mayor Francesco Miccichè prohibits vacationer memento outlets from promoting “objects and representations harking back to the mafia and mafiosi” or gadgets that “reward, or refer in any method or type, to the mafia and organised crime”.
The prohibition order states that the sale of such souvenirs “mortifies the Agrigento group, which has been engaged for years in spreading the tradition of legality”.
The ban comes as town on Sicily’s southern coast prepares to imagine the celebrated position of Italy’s Capital of Tradition 2025.
In 2019 authorities at Agrigento’s archaeological park on the Valley of the Temples banned the sale of Mafia memento gadgets in its neighborhood.
